Job Purpose


As part of GRCBCIO, ISD is the organisation which runs, builds and maintains the Bank's IT infrastructure. It is a £400M organisation with 1700 people and accountable for the delivery of key outsourced services.


A senior Lead technologist in VoiceNetwork Engineering team is responsible for defining the Voice Network LAN/WAN/MAN infrastructure layer and strategy for the enterprise.


The Senior Lead NetworkVoice Technologist reports to the Voice Engineering team leaderHead of Network Infrastructure Solutions and 'owns' the responsibility for voicenetwork infrastructure component roadmaps. The Senior Lead Voice Infrastructure Technologist is responsible for ensuring that the current voicenetwork architecture and infrastructure strategy documentation are current and fit for purpose.


VoiceNetwork Infrastructure Strategy covers components such as PBX, ACD, IVR, Voicemail, Voice Recording, CTI and VoIP Technologies, Unified Communicationsrouters, switches, load-balancers, DNS, firewalls, WAN optimisation, NTP, Routing protocols, multicast, QOS, VPN technology etc. This is not an exhaustive list but is intended to demonstrate the complexity and range of components that make up the Infrastructure Portfolio.



The Senior LeadVoice Network Infrastructure Technologist will provide and drive strategies and roadmaps for complex, most critical and usually most costly network voiceinfrastructure solutions, will have a deep knowledge in more than one component and a broad knowledge many other components.



Functional Accountability (90%)%3C/STRONG>



  • Takes full responsibility to ensure that the voicenetwork infrastructure component strategy of complex, most critical and usually most costly components meet the business requirements within the clients budget.

  • Ensure voice network infrastructure strategy and policy are agreed and communicated at all levels.

  • Indirectly accountable for the quality of strategies done by other Infrastructure Technologists.

  • Will drive voicenetwork infrastructure initiatives to implement the roadmap ensuring budget is secured for delivery.

  • Ensure voicenetwork infrastructure component blueprints exist to enable voicenetwork Infrastructure designers to produce high quality designs.

  • Working with ISD designers, Project Service Architects and Architecture, Governance & Standards for input and to understand and influence changes in architectures policies and strategy

  • Create and Maintain necessary capability, knowledge and skills personally and within ISD to deliver a world class VoiceNetwork Infrastructure Strategy.

  • Coaching and Mentoring of other VoiceNetwork Infrastructure Technologists

  • Keeping knowledge of Barclays Infrastructure Products and Services current

  • Keeping knowledge of Supplier Infrastructure Products and Services current

  • Define and Champion the use of Technical Standards, Procedures and Best Practice.


Leadership and Compliance (10 %)%3CBR/>
Ensure compliance to all ISD disciplines including:



  • Play a role in the development of an Enterprise Technical Design Authority for nvoice etwork infrastructure Solutions to ensure that all voicenetwork solutions are reliable, cost effective and consistent with Barclays business objectives.



    • Provide Technical Governance and Leadership around design and use of GISD VoiceNetwork Infrastructure to ensure the consistent delivery of global architecture, standards and policies in all voicenetwork designs and project implementations throughout Barclays.



  • Adherence to financial plans, processes and ISD commitments.

  • Manage the allocation of resources against the planned levels of demand for own function against time, cost and specification.

  • Provide input to the recruitment of resources required to meet future demands for delivering against planned goals and objectives of Infrastructure

  • Compliance to all regulatory, risk and audit requirements and personal leadership on all related matters

  • Undertake work outside of direct responsibility when required on behalf of the GISD leadership team

  • Represent GISD both internally and externally to the Barclays Group.

  • Act as a mentor/coach for technical staff.



Technical Knowledge



  • Proven knowledge and expertise of specific technical platforms:



    • In depth, detailed knowledge of all major components of the voicenetwork infrastructure used within the Barclays group - e.g. Nortel Meridian, Symposium, MPS, CCT, NCC Call Pilot, Verint & Nice Voice Recording, PSTN Services, Featurenet 1000/5000, Eclipse Call Management, Cisco Call Manager & Avaya Communications ManagerCisco routers and switches to CCIE or equivalent level

    • Proven experience in managing the voicenetwork real-estate of a major financial institution and ensuring it is kept at a level capable of sustaining business requirements

    • Thorough knowledge of the large Nortel, Cisco and Avaya based contact centres environments

    • Thorough knowledge of CTI Integration

    • Thorough knowledge of PBX & PSTN signalling systems such as DPNSS, Q931, Qsig, DASS, E&M, AC15, Sip, H.323, ICM

    • Through knowledge of VoIP based technologies, H.323, Codec's, IP Trunking TCPIP protocol Suite, VLSM, IP address allocation and IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP routing protocols

    • In depth detailed knowledge of the other major routed protocols used with the Barclays group

    • In depth, detailed knowledge of the Cisco IOS/Catos and the various software trains

    • GoodIn depth technical knowledge of Cisco based LAN/WAN routers and switchesand experience of the use of multicast within the banking environment

    • A good awareness of VOIP technology (Nortel, Cisco & Avaya) and it's implementation in a Cisco Routed / Switched environment

    • GoodExtensive knowledge and experience of WAN routing technologies used within the Barclays group

    • Proven experience in designing and implementing large and complex voicenetwork solutions

    • Proven experience of working with the Cisco Advanced Services team on developing complex global solutions and to develop and maintain pro-active technology roadmaps

    • Aware of the history of networks and can explain how it came to be as it is

    • Solid knowledge of all the major components in a vendor's solution

    • Competent in discussing the technology with vendor escalation support team

  • Can describe existing technology infrastructure across all major functions/departments and has a comprehensive grasp of emerging technologies:

    • Can discuss key benefits and drawbacks of existing IT organizational structure and relationships

    • Can describe key aspects of strategic systems and technology development plans

    • Experienced with consulting on architecture patterns and technologies for multiple applications

  • Understanding of the TCPIP protocol Suite, VLSM, IP address schemes

  • A good awareness of VOIP technology and it's implementation in a Cisco Routed / Switched environment

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing large and complex voicenetwork solutions

  • Experience of running global voice network design forums
