Technical Team Leader (Shift Operations)



While this role will be based at our Slough Data Centre, there will be a requirement for the incumbent to be based at Exchange Tower, Canary Wharf, London, for a period of at least 6 months prior to the opening of the new DataCentre.



Overall Job Purpose



Global Data Centres (GDC) have the accountability for the operation of all GRCB Data Centres and Computer Equipment Rooms (CERs) across the globe. The Slough Shift Operations Team Leader is responsible for providing operational and technical leadership for all GDC Shift Operations support activities at the site 24 x 7 x 365. Responsibilities include overall accountability for:


Ensuring process and procedures; installation standards; planned change/access activities and planned maintenance provide environmental stability.


Continuously improving processes, methodologies, and overall efficiencies in concert with other Global Data Centre managers across the estate.


Liaison with Business, Technical teams, Facilities management, and site support teams to ensure proper management of installations and decommission activities in the pipe line.


Ensuring future expansion phases take place to schedule with no impact on the live operation


Keeping up to date with general datacentre technology and mechanical/electrical design

Define, recruit and ensure the appropriate internal training for the shift operations initial team required to cover the site operations 24 x 7 x 365


Deputise for Data Centre Manager as required


Provide overall functional and pastoral care/development of Global Data Centre Shift Operations personnel based in Slough


Visibility of workloads and time keeping/recording


Identification of staff efficiency & effectiveness opportunities


Identification of top talent and/or performance gaps with effective coaching


Personal development of staff and their delivery to objectives


Completion of mandatory leadership courses


Effective staff/team meetings


Sickness/absence reporting and tracking


Holiday and requests to work from other locations, approval and management


Expenses approval and management


Assess and manage project funded, planned overtime/toil requests

Management of Slough Data Centre Shift operations (30%)%3C/SPAN>


The Slough Data Centre Shift Leader will be responsible for supporting the multiple phases covering the design, build, operational management and subsequent expansion phases for the Slough Data Centre and is responsible for ensuring installation standards; planned change/access activities and planned maintenance provide environmental stability.



Design and Build


Contribute to the physical building and plant design requirements for the building design


Monitor all project design changes and enhancements


Understand the maintenance regime required to ensure the building can be maintained in real time


Monitor the building fit-out and commissioning paying close attention to the ASHRAE level 4 and 5 testing


Work with Platform teams, Data Centre Engineering & Capacity planning teams to design the base IT infrastructure required to bring the data centre online


Work with the Platform teams to ensure the IT infrastructure installation is completed in a timely manner


Operational Management


Provide technical and operational leadership for all shift operations staff within the Data Centre.


Provide oversight & continual improvement to Slough Data Centre and underpinning contracts, including assisting in re-negotiations.


Provide resolution to day to day issues regarding the stability and control of local Slough site.


Sign-off on best practice, process, procedures and policy, ensuring this is adhered to within team and by suppliers whilst identifying improvements.


Maximise the availability of DC capacity and efficiency through appropriate tracking of and improvements to, M&E and other infrastructure elements.


Ensure compliance with all Audit and Security policies is adhered to by staff and vendors working at site while providing senior management with ideas for improvement in these areas.


Act as an escalation point for all Slough Data Centre operational issues 24 x 7. Provide timely updates and escalations to senior management for high priority issues that are under Data Centre control.


Maintain and foster strong relationships between management and associates.


Work with Platform teams, Data Centre Engineering & Capacity planning teams to ensure work at Slough is completed within guidelines and timeframes for projects.


Monitor industry trends in datacentre design, build and operations and prepare briefing papers as required



Future Expansion Phases


Work with the data Centre Manager, CRES Engineering, Data Centre Engineering and Capacity planning teams to identify building capacity and ensure future phases are implemented in a timely manner


Ensure the delivery of future phases are designed and implemented in accordance with the standards as defined in the global data centre standards


Incident investigation and resolution including IT function and building infrastructure



Governance of Slough Data Centre Shift operations (15%)%3C/SPAN>


Provide assistance to Risk and Assurance for attendance at DRACAs and risk action planning/mitigation/accountability


Work hand in hand with DC engineering and capacity / demand management to challenge all business requests for install activity within the DC.


Sign-off on acceptance of projects in to BAU


Advocate and enforce best practice for DC environments.


Manage all regulatory compliance attestation activities for critical on-site hosted services


Provide consultancy services for all data centre related projects


Produce operational and efficiency summary reporting as required


Partner with business functions to look at opportunities for continual improvement to the services offered by the team


Incident investigation and resolution including IT function and building infrastructure


Ensure all relevant data centre procedures are kept up to date, subject to review and signoff and stored appropriately

Foster effective relationship between Global Data Centres, GISD and CRES Engineering & Facilities


Foster effective relationships with counterparts in IBIM datacentres to share knowledge and identify potential Group synergies


Provide assistance to Risk and Assurance for attendance at DRACAs and risk action planning/mitigation/accountability

Key Skills


Responsible for all aspects of Data Centre 24 x 7 x 365 shift operation at one of the Banks most critical site in Slough


Represent Technology requirements for the physical design, fit out, commissioning and testing of the new facility


Includes project management, operations leadership, cost centre management, resourcing, risk, security and compliance.
