Manager of Accounting Policy will work under the supervision of the Director, Head of Accounting Policy who reports to the Managing Director, Head of Financial Reporting.

With the convergence of accounting standards, prospects of IFRS adoption and focus on corporate governance, the need to stay abreast of industry and technical accounting issues is paramount.

The following is a list of duties that this position will be responsible for or will assist others within the Finance Department to perform:


  • Assist with researching accounting issues (US GAAP, SEC regs, IFRS and foreign GAAP) that may arise due to the development of a new product, transaction or the release of new authoritative pronouncements;
  • Assist with coordinating the implementation of converged accounting standards and IFRS assessments;
  • Participate in production and quality control of all Legg Mason public filings (10Qs and 10Ks) including the adherence to proper disclosure guidelines (SEC and US GAAP);
  • Research and analyze competitors' reporting to identify trends in presentation and disclosures;
  • Assist with the development of on-going technical seminars, tutorial sessions and CPE sponsorship for the Finance Department staff with a focus on developing the technical expertise of the staff;
  • Assist with monitoring all new accounting developments and evaluate the effect they may have on Legg Mason and its financial statements, including but not limited to items issued by the FASB, SEC, IASB and PCAOB;
  • Resolve potential accounting issues identified through periodic communications such as the quarterly subsidiary accounting questionnaires;
  • Assist in identifying and coordinating the US vs. foreign subsidiary accounting differences to ensure that proper US GAAP adjustments are being made;
  • Ensure the proper update and maintenance of Corporate Accounting Policies.
  • Monitor adherence to corporate policies by Legg Mason's external subsidiaries including adherence to corporate accounting policies;
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls related to the Accounting Policy area.


Ideal Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting;
  • 5-10 years of experience, specifically in Public Accounting;
  • CPA preferred;
  • SEC experience a strong plus;
  • A passion for performing independent technical accounting research;
  • Project management experience;
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office suite;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; comfortable communicating with a number of internal clients at all levels.
