Global External Networks & E-Channels Engineering was formed to bring much needed Global engineering expertise in-house in order to facilitate the global expansion of the bank and to develop the Internet/Extranet strategy for the global retail bank, wealth management and investment banking organisations moving forward.
The E-Channels Engineer is accountable for the delivery of high quality architecture, standards, design patterns and roadmaps of Internet/Extranet facing infrastructure. This role will be the in-house expert on management and monitoring tools and strategy for network elements in the E-Channels environments globally. The ability to rapidly provision new services, troubleshoot issues, obtain meaningful metrics including usage and performance is key to transforming E-Channels into an easily consumable utility service. The E-Channels engineer will need a deep understanding of the 15 tools for network management, technology trends, gaps/weaknesses, and strategy to remedy gaps/weaknesses. The E-Channels Engineer responsibilities will include collaborating with networks, security, architecture, and key project teams like the data centre migration initiatives. Responsibilities will span E-Channels stacks below and underlying tools like DNS, NTP, etc.
1. C2B - Customers to Business e-commerce channels
2. B2B - Business to Business e-commerce channels
3. Internet Access Channels for outbound internet access
4. Mail Gateway Services for secure inbound/outbound email traffic
5. VPN services over the internet
6. 3 rd part connections to/from un-trusted zones
The E-Channels Engineer will be part of a E-channels Engineering team which will collectively produce the global architecture of our DMZ environments. In addition the team will produce design patterns for project designers to consume readily, provide consultation to critical e-commerce projects, and develop roadmaps for internet/extranet environments and services.
The major focus area for the engineer will be:
1. E-Channels network management and monitoring tools roadmap and strategy development
2. E-Channels network management and monitoring tools design pattern development and design authority
3. 4 rd level escalation and support of complex issues
4. Ensure Compliance with Group Architecture, Risk Management and Enterprise design governance. Specifically address any audit observations and IT CIGLS requirements requiring effective management and monitoring tools.
The team and stakeholders are truly global with staff located at the following centres of excellence

To support we require an individual with a successful background in e-commerce infrastructure network management and monitoring, excellent global communication skills, good knowledge of key technologies and trends, innovative thinking and a proven consensus builder. Prior experience with Barclays tools, cigls requirements, security standards is desirable. The individual will be supporting and interacting with a variety of businesses including:
o Global Retail Bank
o Barclaycard
o Investment Bank (Barclays Capital)
o Global Wealth Management
The engineer will need to demonstrate key leadership skills including:
o Interfacing with senior internal stakeholders.
o Be a visible global leader across the team and across the business.
o Assist in governing and communicating E-Channels strategy and design.
Proactively develop group-wide standards in the E-Channels space.
Main Accountabilities and approximate time split
Ensure E-Channels infrastructure strategy and policy are agreed and communicated at all levels.
Directly accountable for the quality and timeliness of E-Channels strategies.
Work closely with external networks engineers to ensure that networks is designed to meet overall E-Channels strategy and roadmap.
Working with solution designers, Architecture, Governance & Standards for input and to understand and influence changes in architectures policies and strategy
Create and Maintain necessary capability, knowledge and skills personally and within team to deliver a world class E-Channels Infrastructure Strategy.
- Coaching and Mentoring of other E-Channels Infrastructure Engineers
- Keeping knowledge of Barclays Infrastructure Products and Services current
- Keeping knowledge of Supplier Infrastructure Products and Services current
Define and Champion the use of E-Channels Technical Standards, Procedures and Best Practice.
Provide input to the recruitment of resources required to meet future demands for delivering against planned goals and objectives of Infrastructure
Compliance to all regulatory, risk and audit requirements and personal leadership on all related matters
Undertake work outside of direct responsibility when required on behalf of the GISD leadership team
Ensuring that the whole team is fully conversant and fully aligned with the E-Channels strategy
Technical Competencies
Proven knowledge and expertise of internet facing infrastructure
In depth knowledge of major components including networks, security systems, middleware, platforms, provisioning ad monitoring systems.
Thorough knowledge of major vendors in the areas above, industry trends
Extensive knowledge and experience of Barclays internet facing systems
Competent in discussing the technology with vendor escalation support team
Experience with key host management and monitoring technologies including:
VMWare Tools
Redhat Linux Tools
IBM AIX/pSeries tools
CA Wily
TSM Backup
Novell Privilege User Management
nCipher HSM
TeamQuest
Quest Foglight
ESM Compliance monitoring
Can debate where appropriate to other technical lead and business contacts
Ability to present detailed technical information in an easily understandable format
Able to lead functional requirement walk-through and quality reviews
Experience in evaluating design effectiveness (themes, readability, visual impact)
Has experience in developing and maintaining technical reference documents
Familiar with technical documentation standards, guidelines and best practices
Ability to provide 3rd/4th level support of network management and monitoring infrastructure as and when required
Experiences with tools and techniques for securing/hardening a network infrastructure, Familiar with existing policies and practices
Has an understanding of the operational issues and considerations for securing information
